Learning about dates
Make sure your children understand about dates. It’s important for children to be able to spell the days of the week and the months of the year! Do your children recognise and understand the different ways the date can be written?

Our 4 year old just about has a handle on the days of the week now, for ages it seemed every day was Tuesday 😉 She also knows which month her birthday is in but can’t recall all 12 months yet.
One cute thing she does is wanting to know how many sleeps it is until something happens, rather than how many days.
That’s great, Adrian! She’s obviously going to get off to a good start at school! A lot of children wobble a bit with spelling the days of the week and the months of the year independently, especially when they are only asked to write the date in number format. It’s a good thing to check periodically!
Gail, you suggested very sensible activities in your blog. Like Adrian (above comment) I found that many children want to know how many sleeps until something happened, and that the concept / sense of yesterday, today and tomorrow needs grasping – which your activities can help a child to grasp.
Thank you, Norma!
